November's Coming

Halloween is almost here with scary costumes and sugar highs. Right behind is November and the beginning of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month.)

I’m sure you have read about this on many blogs, but I’m a newbie at this and I’m going to do it. Not try, do. I’m determined. This will be the first time I will write a long piece in 30 days.

I’m not the only newbie novel writer doing this and we all face the same problems. Some of us work full-time or part-time. Some are unemployed and must search for work each day. Some have small children or teens to wrangle. There’s cooking, cleaning, changing the oil, raking leaves, cleaning gutters and a hundred other things that get in the way, but we are all determined.

Warn your family and close the drapes. Ignore the phone. You don’t have time for all those calls. Accept the first invitation to Thanksgiving dinner you receive. You won’t have time to cook. I also have two grand children with November birthdays. What is a writer to do? Write.

Seasoned writers face the same problems and I’m not sure if they feel panic or calm as they wait for the local church bell to chime midnight Monday night.

I have read everything from how to budget your time to how many words to write each day. Some explained making good outlines and time lines is important and some wrote - dive in and write off the top of your head. Your story will come to you. I’m not sure what I’ll do.

My best guess is to face my lap top and let my thoughts run down my arms, into my fingers and onto the keys. I’m sure a story will appear on the screen.

This blog is a bit tongue in cheek because writing 50,000 words in a month will be a challenge, but one I'm excited to face and complete. I’m sure I will have time for dinner and other duties not to mention birthday parties.

My favorite time to write is late evening when the world has slowed down and it’s quiet. I disappear into my own world of thoughts and words. It’s a happy place and writing is my passion.

If you want to join the rest of us, go to NaNoWriMo.org and sign up. Challenges are important for growth in all aspects of our lives and I look forward to this one.

I’ll blog again in two weeks and let you know if I'm surviving.

Until then Happy Writing.

  1. Good luck Marianne! I'm hoping in two weeks I'll still be hanging in there as well. :)
